We've all been there: You ask students a question, and one student raises his or her hand and says "Can I go to the bathroom?"
I find that having hand signals in my classroom removes confusion both from the teacher and the student. If I am teaching a whole group lesson or at my small group table, I know what a student needs with a quick glance. I can simply nod or shake my head, and continue with what I'm doing.
I have included a set with pictures as well to aid with comprehension for younger students, or with ESL students. As an ESL teacher, I find these significantly help my students who come to me knowing very little English, as they can ask for what they need! This is a great stepping stone for them.
I hang these along the side of my SmartBoard so that they are clearly visible at all times. This helps ensure they are being used!
