A three part 1,600 slide PowerPoint roadmap leads the way for fantastic journey through the brain and sensory organs. This product includes critical class notes (red slides), built-in hands-on activities with instructions, questions and answers, amazing visuals, many built-in quizzes, step by step drawings, video links, brain games and senses activities, 6 page homework that chronologically follows the PowerPoint slideshow, answer key, lesson notes, concluding review game, and much more.
Note: Much more is included in this PowerPoint than is described in the brief summary below.
This PowerPoint begins with a description of the Nervous System and has the students sit silently with their eyes closed and try to use some of their other senses than sight. I also have the students put their hands out and I place an ice cube into their hand. Directions and visuals are included. A neuron is then described and students create a step by step drawing. Chemical and electrical messaging is addressed. An activity has student build a neuron from pipe cleaners and some other classroom materials. A series of simulation exercises have the students get of out their seat and become a neuron passing a message. The three types of neurons are then addressed and the students must demonstrate an understanding with a series of challenge questions. The central and peripheral nervous systems are then addressed. Students then create a network of brain cells with a fun connect the dots visual drawing. The skull and CSF fluid are addressed and teacher demonstration with an egg in a jar with water and lid vs. no water (The jar with water and the egg doesn't crack b/c of fluid / cushioning). Instructions on how to build a brain are provided with flour, water, and other kitchen ingredients. A step by step drawing of the brain then unfolds with each slide. A difficult sketch becomes easy. The parts are labeled at the end and their function. A neat link to a left brain vs. right brain test is provided. The vertebrae are then described. Descriptions of paralysis are mentioned here and a link to spinal cord injury video is provided. Some neat activities with visual processing are presented that will excite your students. The lobes of the brain are then addressed in a step by step process. Students then sketch a brain to label places where different functions occur. The majority of the rest of the PowerPoint provides really short but very fun and meaningful activities that explore each function of the brain. Many of these activities are hands-on, some are step by step drawings. Step by step of an ear and eye with labeling and functions are provided. Memory is also addressed. This section is full of really great activities that your students will enjoy. A section is also provided with many video links about the adolescent brain, observation skills, subliminal advertising, and much more. This is a really neat PowerPoint that my students have really enjoyed. A combination of brain games, hands-on activities that explore the senses, amazing visuals, and much more make this a student favorite. Instructions, visuals, and more make it a snap teach. A 245 slide review game with answers concludes the PowerPoint.
