This is a video guide the Black Mirror episode "Nose Dive," in which a women's access to a future society is based on her social media ranking. During the episode, the women experiences a series of humiliations that lead her to question the social structure based on popularity, and to become an outcast of it.
This episode is originally in English, and it contains a slew of themes relating to the AP theme of identity and friendship. I use this in my Spanish 3, 4, and 5AP classes.
The videoguide stars with a survey in Spanish asking about the affect of social media in the student's present life. They are then prompted to give themselves a popularity rating, and rate a fellow student, in order to understand the problematic notion of value based on others' perceptions.
There are about 20 level one questions regarding the plot of the story, and then there are English prompts for level 3 questions regarding social media, culture, and social divisions.
The episode itself is just too long to do in one class period, so the activity is designed to do over two classes. It can also be couple with a debate on the value of social media.
BE FOREWARNED! There is an amount of swearing in this episode, and the last minute of the video has a series of f-bombs, one after another. I put the Spanish subtitles on, mute the episode, and have a fun discussion after about subversion of norms. Just be aware.
