Product Description
This lesson will help you teach your students to recognize the net of a 3-dimensional shape, as well finding the surface area using that net!

Print out and laminate card slides. Print enough so that students can work in groups of 4-5.
Print one Key to use later.
Cut out (or have a volunteer cut out) individual cards.
Shuffle and place them in an envelope.
Project directions slide or print it out and place it at a station.
Break the class into groups of 4-5, each with their own envelope. Alternatively, use this as as a station activity and place enough envelopes there for students to work in groups of 4-5. Students at each station should have paper and pencil for their calculation.
Have groups race to finish sorting first! If they think they finish, have them check with you and guide them through corrections. Use the Key slide you printed to help you.
Use this opportunity to discuss what “surface area” actually is. Use language such as “18 inches squared means that 18 little squares would cover this shape,” and “the area of each face added together is the surface area.”
Thank you for purchasing and I hope you enjoy doing this activity with your class and watching them grow in understanding of nets and surface area!
