No prep needed lesson plan including a pre-writing activity, discussion questions for small groups or whole class instruction, and three different writing assignments. The pre-writing activity is to activate students’ prior knowledge about the subject of the poem to help them make a connection between the poem and their own lives. Through discussion and different writing assignments they will be able to better understand the poem than they would by merely reading it alone. The questions for group discussion are to help promote an understanding and awareness of the plot and the character of the speaker as well as the use of repetition and refrain in the poem. The three different writing assignments give students an opportunity to write about different aspects of the poem in different ways. This gives them a better chance of finding something at which they really excel. The story is not included, but is easily accessible and available online. By reading Edgar Allan Poe's, “The Raven”, students are exposed to a classic, yet still relatively accessible work.
