• The purpose of this project is to familiarize students with many New Deal Programs.
• Students will create an ABC’s of the New Deal Booklet.
• They can then use the booklet as a resource to write essays and answer questions about New Deal programs.
• Six discussions are included with this lesson plan to help students analyze and evaluate how these programs helped people directly. They will use their booklets as a resource. I use these discussions on Canvas, but they can also be used as a paper assignment.
o New Deal or Raw Deal asks students to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs and justify their choices.
o Relief, Recovery, and Reform asks students to categorize the programs according to the 3 R’s.
o Simulations 1 – 3 ask students to read about one or two people’s experiences in the Great Depression and analyze which programs will help. Students defend their choices.
US and German Responses to the Great Depression ask students to read a short excerpt from Mark Weber’s article on Nazi Germany and to identify similar New Deal programs on social welfare, radio addresses, public works, and wages.
