In this activity, I split the class in half. Each side must find evidence to support one of two claims- The New Deal was effective, or The New Deal was ineffective. There are fifteen engaging documents students can sift through to find evidence supporting their side. We then share our evidence as a class so that students are exposed to both sides. Then, students must place the New Deal on the continuum from effective to ineffective, and explain their reasoning in a paragraph using evidence from the documents. My students find this to be a fun debate activity and have the proper resources to engage in a well-informed debate regarding the effectiveness of government intervention during economic disaster! An answer key is included for your use.
