Give your students the power to learn about Roosevelt's public works projects while also setting the stage for making your community a better place with New Dealers.
In this activity, teachers will allow groups of students (between 2-5 total) to take over one of the following New Deal Agencies.
Their jobs will be is to identify their New Deal agency’s purpose in putting Americans back to work and to come up with public works projects to “fix” their modern day community (either your city specifically or the surrounding area).
Suppose there’s an area in their neighborhood that needs a free clinic or a new hydroelectric dam that needs to be built to provide cheaper energy, or even a new school named after you in honor of how excellent you are as a teacher.
Students can create whatever kind of public works they want the end result is class appropriate and also appropriate to the purpose of their New Deal agency. Students then share their projects with the class.
