New, Improved Pokey Pin Centers that students love to do while exercising their hand muscles for fine motor coordination and learning their vowel sounds at the same time. These are independent centers that children can do on their own while you lead small groups. There are 3 choices for easy differentiation: just pictures for each vowel, pictures with the vowel represented, and then pictures with the words spelled out for each picture.

The only materials needed are a push pin for each student and these papers stapled to a piece of construction paper and you will have ready-to-go literacy centers.
Directions: Put a staple at the top mid center and bottom mid center with the alphabet page on the top. Cut in half and you will have two sets. This must be done on a rug or carpet squares so that the push pin will go through the papers and create a pin hole.
Students will poke the push pins along the black lines of the upper and lower case letter as well as the simple black lined picture that has the corresponding letters sound. Upon completion, students remove the white paper to reveal the dotted picture ready to hang on a window to let the light shine through. Children find this activity very relaxing and enjoyable and find the end results magical!
