The students are initially told that they have been chosen for a reality experiment. They are given assignments throughout the project starting with the design of an island. They have to work through every aspect of a society including government, economics, social aspects. The Project Sponsors add twists to some of the assignments.
I designed this project to be used for small groups. It could definitely be used for individual students, although part of the appeal is in the discussions amongst students. This is a high-thinking project and will result in lots of conversations, discussion and debate. The project is not only designed to enhance knowledge in governments, economics, careers, society and social aspects, but also to encourage students to think about morals and what they feel is right and wrong. The project is only to be overseen by the teacher. The teacher is only there to answer questions and pose questions for the students. The project is almost completely student-only led.
There are 9 Assignments that require Assignment Reports, which can be done in any way you wish, although I have included what I think is most acceptable and encouraging. The last Assignment is a Final Assignment Report, which asks the students individually about the project. Most Assignments will take more than one class period to finish. You can easily add to or extend this project with requiring more research or discussion.
