Greetings Friend!

I really, truly struggled in my first few years of teaching. I had no idea how to set up my classroom properly, manage my students, or keep up with the excessive amount of grading. I was drowning. If this is you or if you're just starting your teaching career and want help getting started on the right foot, this book is for you! I will teach you all my best tips and tricks that will allow you to not only survive your first year of teaching, but absolutely thrive!

This e-book is specially designed for new teachers (0-3 years experience) who are looking for help with classroom setup and management, building effective unit and lesson plans, time management skills, practicing self-care, and living a faithful life. This book will give you some encouragement, tough love, and practical, tactical tips. While all of my examples and tips for unit planning are geared towards Social Studies teachers, many of the chapters would be helpful to secondary teachers of all subject areas.

Now, a huge part of my journey is my faith. So this book contains Bible verses, Christian ideas, and discussions about faith. If you're not a Christian, I'm confident that you'll still find the tips helpful. If you are a Christian, I hope you'll be inspired and challenged by these sections.

Introduction to this Book:

So Your Credential Program didn’t Prepare You for the Realities of Teaching

The other day I went to dinner with a friend. It’s actually a funny story. We went through the same credentialing program together and then lost touch for a while. I ran into her at the California Council for Social Studies Conference last March (about 5 years post-credential). I heard my name, turned around, and there she was sitting on the ground with an old coworker of mine. Color me shocked!

So, we went to dinner, and, of course, the conversation turned to the “old days” of attending credential classes and student teaching. And we laughed and laughed about how all the credential courses we took did absolutely nothing to prepare us for the realities of teaching.

Isn’t that odd? We take the classes, we graduate, and then we… don’t know how to manage and organize a classroom? Deal with students who misbehave? Communicate with an administration that’s unhelpful? Create effective unit plans that build skills and content simultaneously? Know how to balance fun and respect to create a truly magical classroom climate? Be able to live on a teacher’s salary for goodness sake?!

Odd.

And common. After all, half of new teachers quit within the first 5 years of teaching. Because this job is hard. Really, really hard. Sure, it’s also crazy rewarding, but that doesn’t mean it’s not so difficult that you sometimes fantasize about quitting and going back to work at the movie theatre where you were a cashier for your first high school job. Oh, that’s just me?

Anyways, the point is that this job is complex, nuanced, challenging. And if you’re like me, you dove right in without actually knowing what you were getting into. Sure, student teaching was valuable and an incredible learning experience. But you had mentorship then. You had a classroom that was already set up for you. You took over for a teacher who had already established rules, procedures, and took care of many things for you. (If none of this is true for you and you were sincerely on your own with a terrible master teacher, I’m so, so sorry.)

But now? Now you’re on your own. It’s your classroom. They’re your students. And if you’ve bought this book, maybe you need a little help. Some guidance. Some practical advice from someone who’s 5 years in (as of 2019)—experienced enough to give you tactical, effective advice, yet young enough to remember what it was like that first day when 30 expectant faces walked into my room and life got real.

My intention with this book is to come alongside you in your journey through teaching, give you practical help, and walk beside you in faith. Because this book would not be my honest experience and my most real advice without bringing faith into the mix. I wouldn’t be where I’m at now without a Creator who relentlessly pursues me daily, shows me my worth in the darkest places, and teaches me that every moment is grace.

So, friend, let’s start this journey together.
