UPDATED WITH ADDITIONAL RESOURCES! Do you want your students to interact in a meaningful way with their reading? Whether it's their individual reading, class novel, or other selection, this resource gives you everything you need to set up student response journals.
Responding to reading provides opportunity for students to think about their reading, think about their thinking, and respond appropriately to questions using textual evidence and reflection. When students write out their personal thoughts and ideas, opinions, reactions, connections and questions, the result is better comprehension and deeper understanding of the text and author’s craft.
Teachers use these journals to evaluate a student’s understanding of the text, gain insight into their thinking, chart growth in writing, and plan future learning experiences. A grading rubric makes it easy to give several grades from one written entry.
