Happy New Year! Another year is almost upon us. Bring the reality of our customs and traditions to the students in your class through inquiry based vocabulary work. The Common Core is leading us towards more child centered inquiry and less teaching “at” the children. The learning within this 18 page, printable packet is designed with this philosophy in mind.
Using common words associated with New Year, the children are both learning about the traditional holiday together with discovery with vocabulary and sentence structure.
I designed this packet with my 5th graders in mind. It can of course be adapted for 3rd,4th and 6th grade. It is ideal for literacy/writing centers.
Within this packet:
Identify nouns, adjectives, adverbs and verbs
Identify subject and predicate of complete sentences
Matching subject and predicate with a fun and funny activity
Identifying synonyms and antonyms based upon the 36 vocabulary cards
“Pick 3” word work activities (pick 3 vocabulary cards and study them through research, thesaurus, internet etc., follow up with worksheets)
5 related worksheets
36 differentiated vocabulary cards for “Pick 3” and related vocabulary activities
12 differentiated idiom cards for research based vocabulary activities
( the cards with dragons are more challenging than the cards with the wee boy.)
All the best for the coming year!
