★ ★ New Year's Eve Traditions: Research and Citation Creation Activity★ ★

Students research 1 of 20 topic cards containing a New Year's traditions in various cultures. Students research and complete MLA or APA citation practice for their resources in a two page worksheet.

About This Unit:

In many countries, there’s a shared idea that specific traditions on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day—or at the stroke of midnight when “Eve” becomes “Day”—can influence a person’s year to come. Cultures and traditions vary in different parts of the world, but almost all of them are meant to bring happiness, prosperity and good luck in the New Year.

Activity Directions:
In this activity students will pick a New Year’s tradition from the stack of cards. After picking a card (individually for smaller classes; partners for larger classes), student will research the given tradition using the worksheet attached. They will research to identify the country in which the tradition originated, details about the tradition, and the meaning or significance of that tradition to the culture. After completing the mini-research activity, the students will cite the websites use to research their topic. The students may then present their topics to the class with a small poster.

The worksheet is created to be used for MLA or APA citations and both are options on the linked website. Tips for using the website are included in the teacher guide.

I created this for my 4/5th grade gifted and talented students and the activity took about two days. My students loved the opportunity to research and give a brief presentation to their peers. This was also a nice opportunity to have the students work on citations.
