Students create resolutions for book characters or for themselves for the New Year 2017!
The first day of school after December break is not everyone's favorite day, so set the tone of the New Year off with celebration from the get-go, while sneakily addressing Common Core Reading Standards!
Put up a Youtube video of a fireplace crackling, play Auld Lang Syne in the background, and watch your students enter your room with a sense of curiosity and excitement. Then roll out this activity -- all the work's been done for you! -- and watch their brains grow. Just print it and you're all ready! (Note the preview is compressed and thus lower quality than the real thing. I wanted you to see all the goodies you'll get, though!)
Your students can create resolutions for themselves, for book characters, or both! Whichever path you choose, there are brainstorming sheets that lead students along step by step to develop both resolutions and hopes. Indeed, they will learn the difference between the two, offering a great opportunity to see resolutions as part of a growth mindset.
Included are two examples of filled-out brainstorming sheets, including one for Hermione Granger, for any Potter fans in your classroom. Or fill one out together for a book character you discovered together as a class! (Kids love the creative process here. It's low risk, with huge payoff!)
While making a gorgeous bulletin board or hallway display, this project more importantly pushes students' reading comprehension to the highest levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. They will analyze their characters and create imagined goals for them, based on evidence they have garnered from the text.
Make that first day back a day a lovely and festive one for you and your students with very little effort!
In both greyscale and color, this New Year's resolution pack will go easy on your printer ink.
