New Year's Superstitions: Passage and Questions - That's right! Around the world, New Year's Day and Eve are filled with all kinds of superstitions. You might also call these New Year's traditions :-). You and your students will enjoy learning about some crazy New Year's superstitions. Students will connect to the superstitions they already 'most likely' participate in, such as blowing out a candle to make your birthday wishes come true, and then learn a few new ones, such as not sweeping your house on New Year's Day for fear of sweeping your luck away :-)

Click on the preview above to get a better idea of what is include.

This is a perfectly fun passage to begin school with after the holiday break because it is kind of entertaining (you know, in a crazy way......hmmm... does giving a kiss at midnight on New Year's Eve really guarantee a strong relationship for that year????) :-) It will be high interest for your students, as they can share other superstitions they are aware of.... black cats, the #13, no umbrellas open in the house.... the list goes on and on!!

NOTE: This passage does not focus on 'magic' or 'warding off evil', it just focuses on the fun behind the superstitions and the superstitions that pretty much lead to good or bad luck, which of course, is why so many come at the New Year. People want their year to be filled with good luck.

IMPORTANT---- I offer this SAME passage in two different formats. This particular product is a one page passage with 6 text-based questions that go along with the passage.

The other format is for interactive notebooks. It is the exact same passage and questions just formatted differently. If you would like to view the interactive notebook version, click HERE. You can then read the description to see which format works best for you.

This passage was written with 4th graders in mind, but it can be used with more advanced third graders or weaker fifth grade readers. Please use your best judgement.

What's included?

This pack includes a one page reading passage that should help students better understand the definition of superstitions, why they are unjustified, and why there are many at the New Year. It will focus on a few popular ones throughout the year and many for the New Year.

In addition to the passage, there are 6 questions. One is on the definition of unjustified, one focuses on why people participate in them even if they know there is no scientific findings to justify them, and then there are 4 other questions.

An answer key is also provided.

PLEASE.... if you have any questions about the questions asked, what the passage includes, or anything else, just send me a message before you buy. :-) I will be glad to try and answer those.

In addition to doing this activity as a whole group reading lesson, you could also have students do it during a literacy center. Feel free to use it in your classroom however you would like.

**PLEASE... if you see any typos, send me a message before you rate the product. I can usually have corrections made very quickly. Thank you ahead of time.
