January is the perfect time to start talking about resolutions and how we can make actionable steps to change our lives for the better. I love teaching goal making and building in actionable steps and accountability partners to help support our efforts in positive change.
The unit begins with a classroom discussion that builds vocabulary and a common language for talking about resolutions and traditions on New Years. After the discussion, students write about their personal resolutions and make an "action map" where they decide on some actionable items they can do to help support their resolution.
The second part of this unit is focused on how New Years is celebrated all over the world, and letting students to pick a country to research and present about their unique traditions.
The final piece of this unit is creating an art project to be displayed in the classroom or in the hall, so they can be visibility reminded of their resolutions. This also becomes a proclamation of our goals for our school community to support. All of this work is common core aligned.
