This PowerPoint includes the New York State Symbols that are part of the 4th grade curriculum in New York State. There are 18 slides total. The slides are to teach the information and to be used as a review tool. There is a separate slide for the state bird, flower, fruit, muffin, beverage, tree, bush, saltwater fish, animal, insect, freshwater fish, reptile, fossil, shell, and gem. The slides are designed with all levels of learners in mind, including ESL students. Slides are consistent in format with each one stating, "The New York State ________ is _________. Initially, this is all that will appear on the slide. This builds the suspense while students guess what they believe the symbol to be. A picture or two of the symbol then appears giving students the chance to make a more educated guess. Finally, the name of the symbol is revealed. Because of this format, the PowerPoint can then be used as a review tool, either whole class or by students individually.
