This book review book report was created for a 3rd grade class as their first book report of the year. It can also be used with 2nd or 4th grade students and given in a variety of formats. Students choose a Newbery Winner (or Honor book) and write a review using the template given in the packet. This project can be used alongside a lesson or unit on choosing a good-fit book since it relates to book recommendation. Some essential questions can be: In what ways is a book a good fit for you? Would the same book be a good fit for someone else? What are the qualities that would make it a good fit (or would make you recommend it)?
The best part of the project comes at the end when the students post their reviews online. My students posted on www.barnesandnoble.com, but there are many other websites too. If you have the available technology, you can also have your students post independently or on a school/classroom dashboard for others in the school community.
Included are directions and the student book report packet. The student packet contains step-by-step directions, a pacing guide, a rubric, and the book review template pages.
