Description

It’s not like our adult ESL students are taking a math class, so why are numbers important for them to learn?

Numbers are an important part of vocabulary for adult ESL newcomers.

They always have ample opportunities to use number terms outside the classroom. Maybe they’re shopping for a sweater and would like to ask about the price. Perhaps they need to give their address to someone or ask for the address of a place. With numbers, they can get the phone number of someone they want to ask out on a date, find out how much time they have left on their exam, or bargain with someone over the price of a car.

It may not take a lot to learn the terms for numbers, but when you are a foundational or newcomer student, you must start somewhere.  You can have your students practice using English by asking for and giving information using medical terminology or something basic.  Like numbers!

Students practice using numbers to ask and respond to questions about phone numbers, addresses, and dates in this resource.  They’ll also use ordinal numbers.  Students will work independently, in pairs, and in groups/as a whole class.  They’ll be reading, writing, speaking, and listening to numbers.

What's Inside:

  • Spelling:  Students spell numbers 1-21, 32, 43, 54, 65, 76, 87,98, 100 and 1000.  Then they identify read numbers to determine if there is a match.  For example:  eighteen  Is it 18?  Yes, it is.  No, it isn't. PLUS Answer Key
  • Numbers Partner Work:  Students take turns reading numbers to a partner who writes them down.
  • Survey with Numbers:  Students survey 8 people to ask about the number of siblings/children.
  • Partner Work:  How many?  Students ask partners, "How many" questions and record the answers.
  • If...But...:  Students complete a set of 12 instructions.  For example:  Write the number nine if you love winter, but write the number five if you don't. PLUS Teacher Page / Answer Key
  • Numbers in Time:  Students listen and circle the time they hear. PLUS Teacher Page / Answer Key
  • Numbers in Addresses:  Students listen and fill in the missing number for addresses. PLUS Teacher Page / Answer Key
  • Numbers in Addresses Partner Work:  Students take turns reading addresses to a partner and listening to and writing down the missing numbers.
  • Phone Numbers:  Students listen to and write phone numbers. PLUS Teacher Page / Answer Key
  • Partner Work with Phone Numbers: Students take turns reading phone numbers to a partner and listening to and writing down the phone numbers.
  • Ordinal Numbers:  Students spell ordinals and then listen and circle the number or ordinal that they hear. PLUS Teacher Page / Answer Key
  • Ordinal Numbers in Addresses:  Students listen to and write the missing ordinal numbers in addresses. PLUS Teacher Page / Answer Key
  • Post Card Addresses Partner Work:  Students create an address and tell it to a partner who writes it down.
