As an upper-elementary ESL teacher in an immigrant neighborhood in Brooklyn, the question I got asked most was, "What do I do with this new student I have? He doesn't speak any English and I have no idea where to start!" I created this toolkit as a guide for classroom teachers to help them integrate newcomers into their heterogeneous general-ed classrooms. It includes a tips and strategies for helping your newcomer become a part of your classroom community and participate in all subjects. Eventually, this document set the standard for our school and the principal's expectations for classroom teacher support of ELLs.
