This is a newspaper article assignment for a junior high school English class. I've used it as a media project for a short story unit, but it can be modified for other purposes. (I've left my suggestions of topics to students to give you a sense of how it was used.)
As a class we would discuss what makes a news article a news article. This allows students to understands the codes and conventions of a news article. Then they are tasked to write their own based on what they were previously studying. (In my case, it was a series of short stories.)
This is a six page document and it includes:
- The assignment instructions and rubric
- Brief class activity handout on the conventions of a new article and tone. Students are to fill them out as we discussed them in class.
- A labeled image of a news article (names of the parts of an article)
- A handout on the 5Ws and the inverted pyramid.
