Newsela or Any Nonfiction Article Summarizing & Beyond and About the Text Questions

I tailored this resource to prepare my students for Fountas and Pinnell testing because I find they need practice summarizing a text and answering beyond the text and about the text questions. Newsela is a great, free resource, that can be used to assign students articles, but any non-fiction article will work!

All pages include:
A summary section (on each page)
A beyond the text or about the text question (There is a different question for this section on each page. There are a total of 20 different questions included on the full version and 4 included in this sample resource.)
A “question I still have” section (on each page)

Suggestions for use:
Use during a guided reading session. Choose an article you want your students to read using Newsela.com (or any article of your choosing!) and introduce your article to students by pointing out key features in the article and any difficult vocabulary. Explain to students that while they are reading they will be reading first to be able to complete a summary of the text in the first box on the page. Discuss student summaries and then discuss the second question on the page and have students re-read the article with the second question in mind. Discuss student answers and then have students each come up with a question that they still have about the text to write in the third box. This question could be used for an independent student research project (or even a S.O.L.E. project) that students could share at the next guided reading session.

Use as a whole class activity. Read an article together and write a summary with students to model how a strong summary looks. Likewise, model the answer to one of the second questions on a sheet, showing students how to use evidence from the article as well as explain their thinking.

Use for an independent reading activity. Have students choose an article on Newsela they find interesting, or any article you assign to them and complete one of the handouts in the packet. If you want students to complete this independently, be sure your students know how to write a summary and understand the question being asked!

The handouts can be printed individually or as a packet!
