This newsletter highlights how we remember Armistice Day, November 11, 1918 and honor those veterans by purchasing and wearing poppies. Students analyze the covers - envelopes with commemorative stamps, appropriate postmarks and artwork to get hooked on the topic. The first cover is postmarked from the U.S.S. Texas on Armistice Day, 1933, the 15th Anniversary. The artwork shows a guarding angel watching over military men. The second cover honors the woman, Mona Belle Michael who started the fund raising efforts to help veterans of that Great War. If you display or wear a poppy on November 11, it is because of her. Print off the newsletter and put up on your bulletin board, or use in small groups for student discussion and interaction. Social Studies Skills need practice.
