Grab some old newspaper and let the students dissect them!
I have my students find an article of their choice, They cut them out (making sure they have all of it!!). Glue/Staple/Tape them to a piece of construction paper or legal paper.
Then, using markers, highlighters, or just plain pencils, they label all the nonfiction text features present. Follow it up by asking some though provoking questions about text features and organizational patterns and you have a very purposeful activity! (I had them answer these questions on the front or back of the larger paper).
*NOTE** This should be done AFTER students are taught nonfiction text features and organizational patterns. It's an informal assessment.
