This is a comprehensive unit designed for the study of newspapers in an English classroom. Students learn the parts of the newspaper, key terms of newspapers, placement and layout of newspaper design. Students learn how to formulate article headlines and leads, how to dissect news articles for the 5Ws and 1H, how to use an inverted pyramid for news article writing. Students read a variety of articles, searching for facts, opinions and bias - all elements of critical literacy. Students read and write editorial columns and news articles for hard news stories as well as tabloid papers. Students learn to research movie reviews and write their own. Students practice word economy with classified ads. At the end of the unit, a Differentiated Instruction Pyramid project is givent to students and a unit test completes the unit. This package has every assignment, every overhead note, every handout and rubric required to be ready to teach this unit. My grade nines love this unit - but you can easily modify it to be relevant and teachable to grades 7-10.
