Fun online activity! Support a deeper understanding of Newton's Second Law of Motion and the F = MA equation by having students explore the relationship between mass, energy, and acceleration. This document does not expressly use the term "Newton's 2nd Law" but rather has students explore the questions "How does SPEED affect kinetic energy?" and "How does MASS affect kinetic energy?". Students gain a true understanding of F = MA with this activity.

Students use a free and easy to access online program (printed on the document for kids to enter). They "play" with object size and velocity of objects in a catapult and then measure and record the resulting energy. It includes the manipulation of variables, the collection of data, and data analysis. It's fun, highly engaging, and directly supports understanding of MS-PS2-2. This can be used as an in-class activity or a take-home assignment. A nice extension of this activity (not on the document) is to have students graph the data they collect during the activity.

For this activity, student internet access required. Adobe Flash Player is also required - a free program that is already on most computers.

Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects. Examples of practical problems could include the impact of collisions between two cars, between a car and stationary objects, and between a meteor and a space vehicle. Assessment is limited to vertical or horizontal interactions in one dimension.
NGSSMS-PS2-2
Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. Emphasis is on balanced (Newton’s First Law) and unbalanced forces in a system, qualitative comparisons of forces, mass and changes in motion (Newton’s Second Law), frame of reference, and specification of units. Assessment is limited to forces and changes in motion in one-dimension in an inertial reference frame, and to change in one variable at a time. Assessment does not include the use of trigonometry.
