This lab is a great way to reinforce the concepts tied to Newton's Second Law of Motion. It uses everyday materials so it is easy to use and set up.
There are two parts to the lab. In the first students increase mass by adding pennies (mass) to the cup. When students create bar graphs with their data it is clear to see as mass increases the acceleration decreases.
In the second part of the lab students increase the force applied. When students create bar graphs this time it is clear to see that adding force (rolling more marbles) cause the acceleration to increase.
Directions for students to analyze and graph their data are included. Directions for writing up a conclusion are also included.
