Reciprocal Teaching is a tried and true strategy for encouraging student engagement and collaboration between students. The teacher becomes a moderator of student interaction and allows each student to build their own comprehension as they step into the coaching role. This Reciprocal Learning Activity provides necessary support to ensure every student can help his/her peers along the way!
Students work in pairs to practice, apply and assess their mastery of Newton's Laws of Motion and their general understanding of balanced and unbalanced forces. Each student is tasked with answering ten application questions and if they get stumped, their partner is ready with an answer key and helpful hints to guide and coach their partner to the correct answer!
- 8.6A demonstrate and calculate how unbalanced forces change the speed or direction of an object’s motion
- 8.6C investigate and describe applications of Newton’s law of inertia, law of force and acceleration, and law of action-reaction such as in vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth’s tectonic activities, and rocket launches
Students at every level can effectively participate and coach their partner with the embedded supports! So step back and use this opportunity to informally assess student mastery while your kids do the teaching AND the learning!
