Who else wants students who can demonstrate their understanding of force and motion?

Students will apply their knowledge of momentum, energy and Newton’s Laws of Motion to design and build a crash worthy vehicle.

The vehicle must be aerodynamically designed and it must be able to roll along a test ramp (a plastic rain gutter propped up against a ladder) and into an immovable object at the end of the track (a brick wall) while protecting the passenger (a raw egg) from injury.

Includes detailed instructions, vocabulary worksheet, pre-construction thought questions, car design planning sheet, competition day data tables, graph paper, and post-race thought questions.

I have used this project for years, and the students love it! It takes about five class periods (50 min each) to complete this project. I use it as a culminating activity at the end of our force and motion unit. The students complete this project in teams of four, and they really enjoy the competition between the teams!
