This is a lab that helps students understand concepts of motion, force, and speed. In the first part of the lab students are asked to balance pennies on their elbow and catch them with their hand. Then answer questions dealing with the laws of motion on the pennies.
The second part of the lab asks students to create a creature out of clay and place their creature in a car running down a ramp and into a wall. The lab asks students to measure distances, time, and force. Then record their findings into a table and use correct formulas to figure out both speed and force.
Finally students are asked to create a seat belt to save their creature's life and explain how the forces change when you add the seat belt.
Materials that are needed: pennies, a car, a ramp, a box, 9 books, clay, a stopwatch, a spring scale, a meter stick, and a triple beam balance.
