This lab sheet includes an activity that will help students understand Newton's third law of motion. Vocabulary and concepts covered in this lesson include: air resistance, projectile, and trajectory.

In this activity, students create paper rockets to demonstrate the relationship between action and equal and opposite reactions of motion. I usually have students work in small groups for this activity. Each group draws a bullseye on a poster board or other large paper and lay it on a desk or attach it to the wall. Then, students take turns aiming and shooting their rockets at the target. I have them take three tries each and label their shot with their initials. After everyone has a turn, we compare and discuss strategies for shooting and aiming. Then, we apply this to Newton's laws of motion and discuss the effects of air resistance on the rocket.
