I love this activity to help students identify the difference between context details and thematic statements! They're easy to mix up because they both convey something important about a text, but students come away from this activity being able to spot the key words that reveal the difference. Ultimately, this helps them with their writing down the line.
Ways to use:
As suggested on the handout, students can simply annotate in the chart.
For a more kinesthetic learning option, cut the sentences into strips, pop them in an envelope, and have students do a sentence sort! My students love this as a timed challenge for group work when they have to find the words in each statement that prove it is contextual vs thematic!
This document is editable for any text, but if you'd like to use it for Elie Wiesel's Night, there is an answer key on the second page. Happy to answer any questions you might have! Thank you so much for coming by my page!
