Product Description

Looking for rigorous and engaging lessons that will help your students understand why they should learn about the Holocaust and other genocides?

This 3-5 day unit covers bullying, hate crime, and genocide by exploring a TED Talk, famous quotes, a poem, an essay by Elie Wiesel, an opinion piece, and a study done on Holocaust knowledge and awareness.

Students will start their unit on Night, The Diary of Anne Frank, or genocide with curated texts that will get them thinking, discussing, analyzing, and shifting their perspectives.

The unit ends with an in-class argument essay which will help students to synthesize the texts when they formulate their own ideas based on the evidence.

Essential Questions:

  • Why is it important to learn about the Holocaust?

  • What can we learn about our own lives by studying the Holocaust?

  • Why are some of the causes of genocide?

  • How can we prevent genocide from ever happening again?

Included in this resource:

  • a daily schedule with suggested times and process

  • links to the 5 sources for the unit

  • questions for analysis and discussion on the poem and the TED Talk

  • prompts for student reactions to the quotes and the essay

  • a graphic organizer for the summative argument essay

  • a prompt for the essay with an outline of a recommended process for students to follow

There are no lectures or power points here—students will do the work themselves, with guidance from you. Rather than telling them what the texts mean, you will be empowering them with the confidence and skills to tackle challenging work on their own.
