Wiesel's memoir, Night, is such a moving and powerful piece that I feel it lends itself to something different than a basic literary analysis essay.
Instead, I have my students complete an original art project that responds to a chosen theme or issue in Night. Students create their art piece, then write a detailed explanation of the piece and the ways it responds to the memoir, and then present their piece to the class.
The full version of this document includes everything you need to make this project a success, including a complete handout for students as well as a teacher rubric.
I was so moved by what my students created: thoughtful songs, paintings, etc, and writing that showed deep understanding of the power of this memoir.
