The lessons in this 135 page Night/ Holocaust unit by High 5 Achievers focus on a variety of the following common core skills: synthesizing information, evaluating multiple sources of information, citing specific textual evidence, analyzing a speaker’s point of view, writing arguments to support a claim and applying knowledge of literary elements. All lessons are not only aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), but also include suggestions for differentiated instruction. There is an appendix which includes rubrics and suggested Holocaust resources. Additionally, all lessons include answer keys. If teachers and students wish to explore further, teachers may select additional age-appropriate Holocaust or war literature suggested in this course. In conjunction with this unit, teachers may purchase the Holocaust PowerPoint presentation (provided on this site) which presents a historical introduction to this unit.
This course offers a variety of lesson plans such as:
• anticipatory set for the teaching of Night
• creating a found poem from Night
• character analysis for Elie and Schlomo Weisel
• pre/post World War II maps
• vocabulary for Night and the Holocaust
• in-class activities
• multi-media enrichment
By studying the Holocaust, students will achieve a better understanding and appreciation of the suffering and heroism of people who have experienced extreme cruelty at the hands of another human being. Students will explore and examine the universal theme of man’s inhumanity to man and see the significance of this theme in today’s society. They will recognize that even though hatred and discrimination still exist, their individual actions can make a difference politically and socially.
Teachers may purchase this entire unit or individual Night lesson plans posted on the site.
