NIGHT LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES: These lesson plans are not based around chapter questions, or activities that are mostly teacher-directed. Instead, they are designed to put the responsibility for learning on the students as they work together to discover the important elements and lessons in the text.
Students will be directed to read the novel in four sections. After they have read each one, they will meet together in groups to complete a series of activities that will both guide them and help them to work independently. Each section has writing activities that build the skills they need to write effectively and analytically about the text. The final section contains activities that are completely student directed. A slide show is also included, with journal prompts that ask students to reflect on some of the important ideas in Wiesel’s work.
Answer keys are provided for assignment and quotation sheets only. The students' answers on their graphic organizers will vary, as there are many different quotes/examples they may choose for each section, and this is meant to be a process where they discover the important elements.
