The following are details from the PPT:

Night- Chapter 6

The death march
Shot anyone that could not keep up
It was extremely cold
A young boy from Poland named Zalman fell to the ground from stomach pains
Zalman was most likely trampled by the runners because the SS officers did not seem to notice
Elie thought of how great it would be to have this all over, to just die and cease to exist
”My Father’s presence was the only thing that stopped me”
Elie’s foot was numb
He could not slow down or he would be taken under by the fast moving men

The Shed
Elie was half asleep as he ran
Men kicked him awake now and then
The SS officers were replaced when they got tired
The prisoners has run and marched 20 kilometers
They reached an abandoned village
They found a shed and sunk into the snow
Elie wanted to sleep
His Father warned him not to as prisoners all around them died in the snow
The ground was covered in the dead
Don’t Fall Asleep

Rabbi Eliahu
Rabbi Eliahu came into the shed searching for his son
He said he had lost his son when running on the road, they were separated
Elie told him he had not seen him
When the Rabbi left Elie remembered that he saw the Rabbi’s son watching his Father fall back and he had run ahead
Elie prayed that he would never do something like that to his Father

Gleiwitz
They began to march again
There were not as many people shot but men fell every minute it seemed
The SS officers said, “a few hours more”
They were almost in Gleiwitz
The prisoners were told to settle in the barracks
The men pushed and shoved and Elie and his Father fell to the ground

Juliek
Elie heard a voice under him crying “Mercy”
He was crushing someone he knew
Juliek who had played the violin in the orchestra at Buna
Juliek had his violin and was afraid the bodies would crush it
Elie fell asleep with just enough air to breath through the bodies
Elie woke and heard Juliek playing a piece by Beethoven on the violin
Elie fell asleep again
At daybreak Elie awoke to see Juliek dead with his violin crushed beside him

From Gleiwitz to Germany
They stayed in Gleiwitz for three days with no food
They could hear the front’s canons
No longer had hope that they would reach them
The prisoners were to be moved to central Germany
There was a selection before the march
Elie’s father was selected “to the left”
Elie ran after him and created a stir in which he was able to get his Father to the right side instead of the left, he was saved
They marched a half hour to train tracks
The prisoners were ordered to stand, so they ate snow off of each others backs for water
They waited hours and the train came in the evening, a long endless train of cars, 100 men to a car
