This unit helps students apprehend how history helps us understand current issues. Teachers how hate crimes come through dehumanization. It will show what concentration camps were like and asks students to consider what should be done because of the atrocities.
The unit focuses on vocabulary concepts of words that are familiar to the students, but whose concepts change throughout the book. The vocabulary words are transport, chimney, selection, hunger, thirst, fear, and fire.
This unit asks students to write an informative essay based on one of the vocabulary words, as well, helping to show the change in connotation and the meaning of the word.
The unit plan includes all lesson aids except pdfs of the book Night, and the pages referenced in lesson 4 from The Book Thief.
