PPT in PDF in Spanish is used to model what is expected from students when doing a current events PPT in the target language. I give them a list of possible topics to research. They select one topic to present with a ppt. They get two grades, one for the project (ppt) and one for the oral presentation.
Trump Care vs Obama Care
Trump Wall and changes to immigration
Economic crisis of Venezuela
Economic Crisis of Puerto Rico
Expansion of the Panamá Canal
Cuba and USA relations (from Kennedy to Obama)
I usually give class time for students to brainstorm and take them to the library to use the computers to get information. Students are given one week to work on the PPT at home. When students do their oral presentations, they are required to take notes.
As a culminating activity I give them an assessment in which they can use their notes. The assessment varies depending on level. If it's a intermediate level, I make a true of false test based on the presentations.
If it's an advance level, I have them write a composition in which they select three topics from their notes to write about. The topic for the composition is "Eventos actuales".
These activities encourage the use of technology, strengthen their research skills, practice reading and writing, paraphrasing what has been read, and speaking in the target language.
