No Country for Old Men
Literature and film
Literature and philosophy
English, ELA

INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT ARE THE FOLLOWING:

➢ A multiple-choice quiz with eight questions, answers, and page numbers.

➢ Six discussion questions based upon four passages from the book. I’ve included the questions with images from the film first, and then just the questions so that you don’t have to print the images if you don’t want to.

➢ A short excerpt from the screenplay.

➢ The first page of the screenplay.

➢ A copy of the 2011 AP® ENGLISH LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION FREE-RESPONSE QUESTION where No Country for Old Men was a listed work.

➢ **NEW** Three passages from the book along with textual analysis questions and teacher notes. I decided to add an addendum to this No Country for Old Men unit as I’ve created a new TpT unit on the novel and there is a small overlap between the two. On page nine of this unit I ask about Chigurh and his “principles.” In my second TpT unit I cover this idea in much greater detail. These new questions come in a separate PDF.

I teach No Country for Old Men as a TEXTURE TEXT or a CONTEXT TEXT usually alongside THE REPUBLIC. Both the film and the novel raise interesting philosophical concepts including, but not limited to, the following: choice, ethics, sacrifice, duty, truth, and freedom. Both the novel and the film also raise questions regarding faith in God.

Here is one of my units on The Republic:
What is Textual Analysis? Unit #2.

Here is my combined No Country for Old Men unit:
No Country for Old Men: entire novel - two units combined and more.
