This unit consists primarily of questions and teacher notes related to the novel NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN by Cormac McCarthy - there is an excerpt from the screenplay as well (with questions).
INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT ARE THE FOLLOWING:
➢ A multiple-choice quiz with 19 questions, answers, and page numbers.
➢ Two passages from the book and one from the film. With each passage there are several questions that may be used as group questions, homework questions, discussion questions, and/or research questions.
➢ There are three essay questions; each essay question has several follow-up questions and/or writing prompts. There are over 25 in total (see the preview for an example).
➢ A copy of the poem “Sailing to Byzantium.”
➢ Teacher notes.
I teach No Country for Old Men as a TEXTURE TEXT or a CONTEXT TEXT usually alongside THE REPUBLIC. Both the film and the novel raise interesting philosophical concepts including, but not limited to, the following: choice, ethics, sacrifice, duty, truth, and freedom. Both the novel and the film also raise questions regarding faith in God.
