This Common Core aligned resource is the perfect way to teach your on-level students and students who are struggling with identifying the central idea in nonfiction texts. Students will love reading this nonfiction article that centers around a relevant and engaging topic, a classroom where no grades are required! Teachers will love this activity because it includes everything that is needed to teach this differentiated lesson. Did I mention that there are several research based strategies used in this close read activity? Students will use a double column notes organizer to help them tackle the nonfiction article. In addition, the article has been chunked into four different sections. Each section includes a separate subheading that students will use to create a question and then closely read that section of text to find evidence to answer their self-generated question. During the third read of this activity, there are two options for the graphic organizer. Option #1 is for lower level students who may struggle with piecing together the supporting details to determine the central idea of the text. This organizer is broken down into smaller chunks. Option #2 is for your on-level to higher level students who will not struggle with determining the central idea and identifying supporting details from the text.

1. No Grades Necessary Central Idea and Supporting Details Activity (4 Pages): This PDF files contains the differentiated resources for this activity. There is a cover sheet with close reading information and tips for both options.

2. No Grades Necessary Assessment (2 Pages): This assessment includes four multiple choice questions that focus on Central Idea and Supporting Details. Each multiple choice question requires students to write a justification to prove their answer is correct by using evidence from the text. In addition, the assessment also includes a constructed response question where students have to identify the central idea of the text and use textual evidence to support their evidence. An answer key is provided for the assessment.

3. No Grades Necessary Performance Task Presentation (28 Slides): This presentation is designed to guide teacher and students through the two days (more or less days depending on your students) of this activity. It includes daily agendas, learning targets, warm-ups, self assessments, and other important information. There are also 10 blank slides that you can use to customize and edit the presentation to fit your needs. ***This presentation is available in PDF and PowerPoint versions so that there will be a compatible software version for any computer or device you have.***

4. Close Read Teacher Models (2 Images): I have included two images of the teacher models that I used in my lesson. These models include text annotations, how I turned each subheading into a question, and then read to answer my self-generated question. In addition, I have also included a model of the third read graphic organizer. You can use these model images for your lesson or use them to create a THINK ALOUD model with the same article the students are using.
