Use this activity to help students build a more robust vocabulary.
"Dead" words are words that are commonly overused and therefore lose their power. Students often use these dead words in their writing.
Introduce the "dead" words to students and have them think of more interesting, vivid words to use instead. Students may use a thesaurus to help.
This activity can be used as a single lesson, spread out over a few days, or you can introduce a new dead word each day or each week.
This set includes:
-A printable journal for students to record synonyms for dead words.
-A set of 43 printable posters for the class to compile their dead word substitutes for display in the classroom.
-A list of 43 dead words with possible alternatives for the teacher.
During writing workshop, students may use either their journal or the posters to help them think of more interesting word choices to improve their writing.
