Do your students need some help understanding author’s purpose? These activities will give your students gradual practice of identifying author’s purpose. They will challenge and reinforce author’s purpose for your students. These are great for in-class work, homework, or done in small groups.
The first activity has simple statements and students decide whether it’s to inform, entertain, or persuade. This activity will give them a first look at how to identify what the author is trying to do. The next two activity start to get larger paragraphs and they have to decide what the author is trying to say. There is also a section that asks the students to explain their answer. I find having something for them to explain helps them to understand themselves.
