How do you actually sit with every single student to help with the editing process? We have created a LIFESAVER for any teacher who has ever asked this question!
This is a very simple, no frills approach to help create more confident writers and save teachers lots of time.
These writing conference reminders have changed everything for us. Here’s how they work:
1)Either read rough drafts before class or during one-on-one conferences with students.
2)Then attach one of these individualized, ready-to-go reminders to their work, and send students off to edit.
Repeat with the next student.
Now you can both easily remember what his/her editing focus was. What did you need to send each student off to work on? It’s so easy to remember when they’ve got a card to show you during your next conference. Or...write which reminder card you gave a student in your writing conference binder. That's it. What's so important is now they’ve each got little notecard-sized examples to remind them WHAT and HOW to edit in his/her own area of weakness.
Other huge advantages/ways to use these reminders:
1) Put the reminders on color-coded paper, and now when you look around the room to monitor, you can see which skills need to be retaught or reviewed.
2) Give more precise feedback without spending hours writing detailed notes on essays.
3) Send them home for homework, and students can work on what is troublesome to him/her specifically.
This means no more explaining and re-explaining, reminding and re-reminding. YAY!
