Discover the hidden habitat of a decaying log.

Rotting logs are an important part of a living community. As it decomposes, a rotting log is a habitat for many different fungi, plants, and animals that either consumes nutrients in the decomposing log or each other. In so doing, they change the structure of the log and gradually create a habitat no longer suitable for themselves; new organisms will arrive and continue the process of decomposition.

This detailed lesson helps you guide your students outdoors in a discovery of the stages of decomposition and the organisms that help it to occur. Descriptions of activities and key vocabulary are included to support you in your scientific study of decomposition.
