I have created this festive activity for my kiddos to practice addition and subtraction (mixed) during the festive month of March! This activity is focused on using the Place Value strategy, NOT the algorithm! One of the strategies I introduce to my second graders, is using Place Value to help solve 2 digit and 3 digit addition and subtraction number sentences. For addition, your students simply draw the base ten blocks for each number they are adding, combine and "carry over" once they have made a group of 10. (Drawing is easy: a "box" for hundreds, a "line" for tens, and a " dot" for ones...then simply circle whatever groups of 10 you can create, and then carry over to the next column). This approach introduces what will be the algorithm in the future, but ensures that your students will grasp exactly what it means to "carry over". They must understand the connection and relationship between the numbers they are working with! For subtraction, your students simply draw the base ten blocks for the first number in the number sentence, then break a part base tens, as needed, in order to "borrow" and subtract the second number in the number sentence. (Drawing the base tens is easy: a "box" for hundreds, a "line" for tens, and a " dot" for ones). This approach introduces what will be the algorithm in the future, but ensures that your students will grasp exactly what it means to borrow". They must understand the connection and relationship between the numbers they are working with! In addition, I have created 2 separate worksheets, intended to be copied front/back, or if it is too many problems (because they do take some time to solve), you can simply copy the front only.
Pages 1 and 2, focus on 2 digit addition and subtraction.
Pages 3 and 4, focus on 3 digit addition and subtraction, using larger numbers up to the 500.
Hopefully this makes perfect sense, and your kiddos will have great success! It is an enriching and challenging! I have differentiated to help you utilize how you see fit with your students!
