Are you looking for an innovative ice breaker first assignment to engage AP Spanish and Culture/IB Spanish Language B students at the beginning of the year? Here is something creative to begin your course on a positive note. You will find Un Puesto en la Clase Avanzada to be a practical experience for future placement seekers . . . .

This project, a 3-in-1 product (resume writing, formal e-mail making a request and panel participation), is appropriate for Homeschool and Classroom settings and can be used as is or is easily adaptable for the following classes:

• All levels of Spanish for Spanish Speakers • AP Spanish Language and Culture
• Spanish Culture Class • IB Spanish Language B - Standard Level
• Spanish III • IB Spanish Language B - Higher Level

THE PERSPECTIVE: We created a meaningful project for our AP/IB students to lower filters and help break the ice of a new course. We aimed to create a product that was interesting, creative and meaningful to begin the course on a positive note and model for students our goal of creating a project-based environment.

THE PRACTICE: Use the Andamio slides to scaffold the lesson and break down the concept of Un Puesto en la Clase Avanzada. The student centered activities included in this bundle will allow to independent work based on past experiences and interests while maintaining structure by adhering to deadlines. Additionally, it affords ample opportunity for students to perform their best in formative and summative assessments.

THE PRODUCT: The resources included in Un Puesto en la Clase Avanzada provide the necessary tools to have students reflect on their language studies and pinpoint their strengths. Students share their accomplishments and goals for their Spanish journey by completing the following tasks:
1. writing a resume,
2. making a request via a formal e-mail to help students become familiar with new rubrics and
3. participating in a panel for a post in the class.
Everyone participates and supports each other to promote camaraderie from the first week of class!

Un Puesto en la Clase Avanzada includes a slide presentation with clear instructions for the teacher to follow the scaffolding we have used effectively in our classrooms and slides to be shared with students.

Un Puesto en la Clase Avanzada, encased as a zip file containing 10 camera-ready documents, has been formatted as a .pdf, a .docx, and google slides for format integrity and EDITING as you wish and includes the following:

• An authentic conversation-starter classified ad
• The National Standards for Foreign Language Learning for all 3 tasks (resume writing, formal e-mail making a request and panel participation)
• A content and language objective
• A teacher friendly, visually stimulating, slide presentation (El Andamio del Proyecto) with margin notes, optional extensions and ideas that guides the teacher through possible steps of delivery
• A slide setting the stage for the assignment with a clearly written writing prompt
• Slides to be shared with the student explaining each separate task throughout the duration of the project
• A curriculum vitae template to be personalized and completed by the student
• A double-sided page with 2 rubrics and helpful comments to encourage meaningful peer evaluation for the formal e-mail reply
• A sample document for how to identify and correct the rough draft
• A third rubric to help focus on the interpersonal speaking portion of the project
• An outside resource in Spanish (reading) and English (video) to help students prepare for a panel interview.
• 15 level-appropriate questions that can be asked during the mock-interview portion of the project

Uses for incorporating this product into your classroom seamlessly:

• Push out through Google Classroom or similar platform
• Independent study
• Whole class instruction allowing students to contribute in real-time.
