"Solving the Puzzle" Inference Worksheets were created using real black and white photos. These worksheets and Anchor Charts are a perfect skill builder for 3rd grade and up. 30 No-Prep Ready-to-Go Worksheets PLUS Anchor Charts and Sentence Stems are perfect for speech therapy, special education, Response to Intervention small groups and skill-based instruction on inference skills. Students will SOLVE THE PUZZLE by completing each section of the worksheet in order to generate an inference statement.

A Blank Template is include for generalization across activities. A completed worksheet sample is also included for your reference. Both the anchor chart and the sentence frames are printable in color or black and white. All photos are formatted for black and white printing.

How to use these worksheets:

*Print the 30 inference worksheets, anchor charts and sentence stems. Depending on student background knowledge, age and target skills, select at least one worksheet to start with.

*Teach students the basic concept of inferring using their personal background knowledge, daily events, and cause/effect statements (example: If I see dark clouds, see lightning and hear thunder, then I can infer it is going to start raining). Teach your students the basic formula SCHEMA+(text) EVIDENCE=INFERENCE.

*Have students list anything and everything they know about the topic represented in the black and white photo under (SCHEMA). For example, if you choose the Worksheet #2, your student may list the following ideas under schema: My mom bakes, we eat muffins for breakfast, muffins smell good, I like the blueberry muffins, they cook in the oven, the oven is very hot, I can’t eat them until they cool off.

*After students brainstorm ideas about baking from their background knowledge, they can list the things they SEE in the photo (EVIDENCE). In this example, they would list: muffins, muffin tin, woman cooking, apron, hand lifting the muffin out of the pan, counter, cookies in the background.

*Using the formula: SCHEMA+EVIDENCE=INFERENCE along with the sentence stems, students SOLVE THE PUZZLE and write an inference statement. “I can tell the woman is baking cookies and muffins because she is wearing an apron, is in the kitchen, and she is taking the muffins out of the pan.”
